9.8 magnitude earthquake means the demolition of evertyhing. Richter magnitude is a logaritmic scale and you can imagine that 0.2 increase means double the impact. Japan buldings can resist to a 9.2 magnitude but 9.8 at least 12 times powerfull and destructive than 9.2 (this is not the formula of Richter Scale, I am trying to explain like explaining to a child. Not everyone is scientist or mathematician)
Higher than 9.0 magnitude means at or near total destruction – severe damage or collapse to all buildings. Heavy damage and shaking extends to distant locations. Permanent changes in ground topography.
