GURU PURNIMA






On this day people worship and pay respect to their Guru.

Overview/History


Indian people hold great respect for their Gurus. The word itself holds immense importance and stature. A Guru in India is a worshipped individual whose knowledge and wisdom have enlighten us in the journey of life. The festival is celebrated by both Hindus and Buddhists. The significance of this day is that the Guru holds the most essential position in one's life and to give him respect and honor people celebrate Guru Purnima.
It is celebrated on the full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashadh (June to August) in reference to the Hindu calendar. This day is celebrated by the Buddhists in the honor of Lord Buddha who presented his first preaching on this very day at Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh. The Hindus also celebrate this day in memory of the great sage Vyasa who is thought as the original guru of Hindu religion.

Celebration


  • Guru Purnima is celebrated by conducting diverse programs and special cultural performances by various organizations and Samarohas. As part of the celebration, devotees present gifts in form of sweets and flowers to their spiritual gurus. It's an ideal time to commence spiritual lessons from a guru. Farmers give great significance to this day because it is believe that the advent of much-needed rains will shower upon their crops and plantations.

    A 'Puja' is kept by all spiritual aspirants of Vyasa in honor of his divine personage. By tradition, from this day the spiritual seekers begin to strengthen their spiritual 'sadhana'. The period of 'Chaturmas' i.e. "four months" starts from this day. Long-ago, wandering spiritual gurus and their followers settled down at one place and studied on the Brahma Sutras composed by Vyasa and used to engage themselves in Vedantic debates.
