DIABETES

LIVING  WITH  DIABETES

1.WHAT IS DIABETES ?

Diabetesmelitus is a disorder in which there is too much sugar(glucose) in the blood.

The transportation of glucose  from the bloodstream to
the cells does not function properly.

This leads to much higher levels of glucose or
Sugar in the blood, than is normal or healthy.

The reason for this could be that your pancreas is not
producing enough quality or  quantity of  insulin or the  insulin being produced is not being utilized properly.

Thus, Your body cannot properly use the energy from
the food you eat; resulting in thirst, tiredness and lassitude, changes in weight, increased passing of urine.

2. WHO CAN BECOME A DIABETIC?

The risk is higher ,when there is a diabetic in the family, especially when both the parents are diabetic.

THE RISK CHANCE IS FOLLOWS

If both parents are diabetes – 99%
If one parent is diabetic and the other from a family
with a history of diabetes  - 70%
If only one parent is a diabetic   - 40%
If  there is no history of diabetes in the family  - 20%
However an increasingly sedentary lifestyle associated with stress is leading to an increase in the incidence of diabetes.

Early recognition of this fact can help to prevent diabetes, as diabetes frequently occurs,  in association  with being overweight and lack of exercise.

DIABETES CANNOT BE CURED BUT CAN BE CONTROLLED

3.TYPES OF DIABETES

There are two types of diabetes

TYPE  1  DIABETES

(INSULIN  dependent diabetes)

The diabetic cannot use his blood sugar properly because his pancreas does not produce enough insulin.
This diabetes can be controlled by diet and insulin injections. Most people with Type-1diabetes become diabetic when  they are children or young adults.

TYPE-2 DIABETES

(NON-INSULIN dependent diabetes)

About  90% of all diabetics belong to this group.
IN TYPE –2 diabetes, the  diabetic makes some insulin,
which is not enough or cannot be used effectively to keep his blood sugar normal. This diabetes can be controlled with diet and tablets.

If these fail, insulin injections may be need.
