An
interesting story on perseverance
King Janak
once wanted to appoint a new Chief of Army. He shortlisted 6 able soldiers from
his Army. He devised a plan to test their abilities, so that he could select
the ideal Chief of Army. The test was to fill a loosely woven bamboo basket with
water from the river and bring it to the palace. Initially everyone laughed at
the mission impossible at hand. After an hour, none of them could fill even a
single drop, leave alone, a pail of water.(as the water was dripping through
the weaves of the bamboo basket). One by one, the soldiers started to give up
.Finally, by evening, one soldier was focused on his goal As he perused his
effort, he could observe that the water holding capacity of the bamboo basket
had increased with time (as the bamboo was soaked in water throughout the day
and expanded by evening). By 8 pm he could pass the test and could get basket
full of water to the palace from the river.
