In modern physics, the arrow of time has different meanings for its different aspects. In physics, the arrow of time has following different meanings-
- Cosmological arrow of time- The cosmological arrow of time is related with the evolution and expansion of the universe.
- Psychological arrow of time- The psychological arrow of time is related to the flow of time as it is observed by consciousness of human mind.
- Thermodynamical arrow of time- The thermodynamical arrow of time is related to the increase or decrease in the entropy (which, in simple terms, means the measure of disorder in a closed system) of the universe.
For some reason, all these arrows of time are pointing in the same direction starting from the Big Bang itself, to the evolution of intelligent life and all the way to the present time.
Now, what if the universe stops expanding?
In such circumstances, there are two possibilities. Either the universe stops expanding and remains in a equilibrium state or it starts contracting in and on itself.
In either case, it will neither affect the psychological nor the thermodynamical arrow of time but the cosmological arrow of time will cease to exist in the former case and in the latter case, it will reverse its direction.
Thus, the arrow of time related to our human mind i.e. the psychological arrow of time will not be affected if the universe stops expanding.
Therefore, time will not cease to exist for us if the universe stops expanding.
