POSTER OF THIS WEEK

DEVOTION Vs DEDICATION

- From yahoo groups

Devotion means (a) Ardent, often selfless affection (b) strong attachment to or affection for someone or something (c) religious zeal; piety

One devotes to a person or a principle hence we say "ardent devotee of  mahan...." etc. Devotion is not for a cause but a belief of a way of life.

Dedication means the act of binding yourself (intellectually or emotionally) to a course of action; "his long commitment to public service"; "they felt no loyalty to a losing team". Dedication means working for a cuase.

Baba Amte dedicated his life for providing medical services to the lepers. Same is the case of Mother Teresa too. Freedom fighters had dedicated their lives for acquiring freedom for our country.

In the corporate set up, we require dedicated employees. A dedicated employee is self-motivated, requires fewer instructions and has compete trust on the authorities. Working long not necessarily means dedication. A dedicated employee would rather puts his/her heart and soul in his/her work.
A dedicated employee shows affective commitment towards his/her work. A less dedicated employee may show commitment but that could be either continuance commitment or normative commitment.

In the  crisis of Satyam, few employees came forward and immediately pledged their support to the new management. This was the act of their dedication.

Dedicated employees give same performance irrespective of the hygienic conditions that job provides.

Indian soldiers guard our borders at Nasirabad where it is believed that temperature touches whopping 50 degree C! Same soldier will continues to guard our border at Siachen Glacier where temperatures becomes -40 degree C in the winter. It's not just bad weather but Indian soldier has to put up with bullets that come from across the border too. Can borders of our country be protected without dedication?

Business Leadership fails if the leader is not dedicated for the cause. Most of the businessmen prefer to dedicate themselves for making more money. But these businesses are not sustained.  Satyam fiasco is classic example.

WINNING

The Habit of Winning

by Vince Lombardi

Winning is not a sometime thing. You don't win once-in-a-while. You don't do things right once-in-a-while. You do them right all the time.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that is first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don't ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game--but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be the first in anything we do and to win, and to win, and to win.

Every time a football player goes out to play, he's got to play from the ground up. From the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That's okay - you've got to be smart to be number one in my business. But, more important, you've got to play with your heart. With every fiber of your body. If you are lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second.

Running a football team is no different from running any other kind of organization--an army, a political party, a business. The problems are the same. The objective is to win. To beat the other guy. Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don't think it is.

It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive team. That's why they're here--to compete. They know the rules and the objectives when they get in the game. The objective is to win--fairly, squarely, decently, by the rules--but to win. And in truth, I have never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, did not appreciate the grind--the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for...needs...discipline and the harsh reality of head-to-head combat.

I don't say these things because I believe in the "brute" nature of man, or that men must be brutalized to be competitive. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hours, his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle victorious.

WEEKEND WISDOM

EIGHT  QUALITIES  OF
 SUCCESSFUL  PERSON

1. Burning DesireThe motivation to succeed comes from the burning desire to achieve a purpose. Napoleon Hill wrote, "Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve." A burning desire is the starting point of all accomplishment. Just like a small fire cannot give much heat, a weak desire cannot produce great results.

2. Commitment Integrity and wisdom are the two pillars on which to build and keep commitments. This point is best illustrated by the manager who told one of his staff members, "Integrity is keeping your commitment even if you lose money and wisdom is not to make such foolish commitments."

3. Responsibility People with character accept responsibilities. They make decisions and determine their own destiny in life. Accepting responsibilities involves taking risks and being accountable which is sometimes uncomfortable.Responsible people don't think that the world owes them a living.

4. Hard work Success is not something that you run into by accident. It takes a lot of preparation and character. Everyone likes to win but how many are willing to put in the effort and lime to prepare to win? It takes sacrifice and self-discipline. There is no substitute for hard work.

5. Character Character is the sum total of a person's values, beliefs and personality. It is reflected in our behavior, in our actions. It needs to be preserved more than the richest jewel in the world. To be a winner takes character. George Washington said, "I hope I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most valuable of all titles, the character of an honest man."

6. Positive believing/ThinkingPositive believing is a lot more than positive thinking. It is having a reason to believe that positive thinking will work. Positive believing is an attitude of confidence that comes with preparation. Having a positive attitude without making the effort is nothing more than having a wishful dream.

7. The Power of persistence The journey to being your best is not easy. It is full of setbacks. Winners have the ability to overcome.Persistence means commitment and determination. There is pleasure in endurance. Commitment and persistence is a decision. Athletes put in years of practice for a few seconds or minutes of performance.
Persistence is a decision. It is a commitment to finish what you start. When we are exhausted, quitting, looks good. But winners endure. Ask a winning athlete. He endures pain and finishes what he started. Lots of failures have begun well but have not concluded anything. Persistence comes from purpose. Life without purpose is drifting. A person who has no purpose will never persevere and will never be fulfilled.

8. Pride of performance In today's world, pride in performance has fallen by the wayside because it requires effort and hard work. However, nothing happens unless it is made to happen. When one is discouraged, it is easy to look for shortcuts. However these should be avoided no matter how great the temptation. Pride comes from within, which is what gives the winning edge.

Pride of performance does not represent ego. It represents pleasure with humility.

The quality of the work and the quality and the worker are inseparable. Half-hearted effort does not produce half results; it produces no results.
Excellence comes when the performer takes pride in doing his best. Every job is a self-portrait of the person who does it, regardless of what the job is, whether washing cars, sweeping the floor or painting a house.

YIELDING

Whoever is soft and yielding is a disciple of life. The hard and stiff will be broken; the soft and supple will prevail
—Tao Te Ching of Lao Tzu
Once, two brave knights set out from their respective domains on either side of the mountain to challenge the other in a battle for supremacy. It so happened that they chanced to meet at the narrowest point of the mountain path where there was just space for one horse to pass and only enough room for one man. Realizing this, the two adversaries looked long at each other in silence, carefully weighing the situation, for they were wise as well as courageous, and knew that any false move would plunge them into the deep chasm below.

Each acknowledged the other’s greatness and nobility of heart, but neither could lose face by giving way. Humility was absent, for neither had ever met with defeat. As they continued to look into each others eyes, calculating their chances, the tension grew, but neither blinked an eyelid, and not a muscle moved. They sat in silent struggle because now it had become a battle of minds, and the stronger mind would prevail. But both minds were of the same calibre and strength, and neither could find any point of weakness in the other. Finally, realizing that they were equally matched in all respects, at the very same moment, they bowed to each other, and in humility slowly backed away, returning to their kingdoms. But they were wiser, having learned that humility never needs to be defensive, and that in yielding lies the true strength of the warrior. They had also understood that the enemy is the shadow that the protagonist himself casts. So victory and defeat belong to both because each overcame the other’s ego by teaching him how to yield.

TIME

Time will Tell

Once upon a time there was an island where all the feelings lived; happiness, sadness, knowledge, and all the others, including love.

One day it was announced to all of the feelings that the island was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean. So all the feelings prepared their boats to leave. Love was the only one that stayed. She wanted to preserve the island paradise until the last possible moment. When the island was almost totally under, Love decided it was time to leave. She began looking for someone to ask for help.

Just then Richness was passing by in a grand boat. Love asked, "Richness, Can I come with you on your boat?"

Richness answered, " I'm sorry, but there is a lot of silver and gold on my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere."

Then Love decided to ask Vanity for help who was passing in a beautiful vessel.

Love cried out, "Vanity, help me please."

"I can't help you", Vanity said, "You are all wet and will damage my beautiful boat."

Next, Love saw Sadness passing by.

Love said, "Sadness, please let me go with you."

Sadness answered, "Love, I'm sorry, but, I just need to be alone now."

Then, Love saw Happiness.

Love cried out, " Happiness, please take me with you."

But Happiness was so overjoyed that he didn't hear Love calling to him. Love began to cry.

Then, she heard a voice say, "Come Love, I will take you with me." It was an elder. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that she forgot to ask the elder his name. When they arrived on land the elder went on his way. Love realized how much she owed the elder.

Love then found Knowledge and asked, "Who was it that helped me?"
"It was Time", Knowledge answered.

"But why did Time help me when no one else would?", Love asked.

Knowledge smiled and with deep wisdom and sincerity, answered,
"Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is."

7 Spiritual Perspectives on Personal Leadership

--by Swami Chidananda and Prasad Kaipa

How do you deal with change? How comfortable are you with what is on your plate? Are you creating or are you resisting? The quality of your leadership depends on how you deal with the cards that you draw and how you succeed using what you got! In this brief article, we present an approach to increase your personal mastery and leadership effectiveness drawing from ancient spiritual wisdom from around the world.

Integrity: Integrity, at its best, is alignment between thought, word and deed. When we have integrity, the fragrance we enjoy is the state of no inner conflict. Others around us also sense certain strength about us. We say what we mean and we mean what we say. And our actions are not at variance with our words. When there are gaps between our words, thought/felts, deeds and our state of being, those gaps impact our credibility, commitment and courage. When we walk the talk, demonstrate our commitment to what we have taken on through our actions and have courage to listen to our inner voice, we demonstrate integrity and that builds our character and confidence.

Confidence: When we feel good about our own capacity and the position we have taken in particular situations, we exude a great sense of well-being and the vibrations that emanate from us make others feel our positive state of mind. They, then, are more likely to extend their cooperation and play their roles in complementary ways. This is also related to our faith in what our company stands for. The feeling then is: My organization is doing something great, and I am indeed in a position to contribute significantly towards the fulfillment of the organization’s goals. When we have self-confidence, our ability to resist temptations goes up and our self-restraint leads to further increase in our self-confidence.

Restraint: Our life would be happier if we handle difficult situations with thoughtful reflection and identify noble (win-win) responses wherever possible. When we cannot, at least, we should keep under check negative emotions. Expressing displeasure is one thing but giving vent to our anger in destructive ways is quite another. It is important to become conscious and hold back inappropriate thoughts and words – in public and in private. They
harm us even if we indulge in them in secrecy because our attitude gets picked up by others no matter what we do and don’t do. It is as important to restrain our tongue as much as our actions – if not more – because in the name of ‘telling the truth’ and in the name of advice – we lose our self-restraint and that results in loss of energy and enthusiasm in both parties.

Energy: It is important to find ways to keep our energy – physical and emotional – high on important occasions. A diabetic friend once confessed that she would eat some sweets, knowing well it would cause early fatigue to her, and would then feel low in energy, leading to a lot of procrastination. 200-300 minutes a week of physical exercise, experts say, is needed typically for us to stay fit and energetic. In addition to physical and emotional, intellectual and spiritual energy would help us translate our creativity into innovative offerings and engage regularly in reflective and meditative practices. In these days of complexity and uncertainty, managing energy is as important as managing time. When we are aware and alert about opportunities to contribute our energy and time to what is important, we become effective leaders.

Alertness: This is again a state of mind where we rise above our mechanical ways and conditioned mind. When we shake off old conclusions and look at things with a fresh, open mind, we ignite new ideas and see new patterns and learn something fresh. We need to take note that everyday new opportunities emerge and if we have our eyes open, we could seize those opportunities. People change their mindsets and behaviors and when those changes are noticed and appreciated, they will continue to move in the same direction and that requires alertness on our part as a leader. In a similar vein, yesterday’s enemy could extend a hand of help to us today; the friend of yesterday could betray us today. Alertness and trust in right information and right experts in addition to our own intuition would help us become better leaders in the long run.

Trust in Self and in Right Experts: As a leader, we have to know when to trust our intuition; and when to trust external data and information. In doing so, we have to consult right experts. For example, Google has become a valuable source of information and many of us make the mistake of trusting whatever we find online more than we should. We need to validate the source of advice and information whether it is coming from experts or from other sources. We need to actively seek out experts whom we trust -- people who can give timely and valuable advice. We have to learn, over a period of time, to balance advice received externally and intuition developed internally. Second part of trust is about timing. It is absolutely important to consult experts at the right time, well in time. One right input coming to us at the right time can help us execute our projects effectively and successfully.

Execution Effectiveness: Every time we do something that we had promised to somebody, our credibility/reputation/trust grows. When we procrastinate, our image in others’ eyes suffers, even if we give the best explanation or justification. Effective execution means we have to pay attention to four things: completion/time, resources (people/ finances etc.), quality (excellence) and satisfaction (customer and self). Efficiency allows us to complete the project on time but effectiveness means working with our team with emotional intelligence and that increases quality of work that they bring to the project resulting in higher customer satisfaction.

The seven principles (start with the letters I CREATE) listed above help us increase our personal mastery and lead wisely in turbulent times.
