SWAMI VIVEKANANDA'S CHICAGO SPEECH

Speech delivered by Swami Vivekananda on September 11, 1893, at the first World’s Parliament of Religions on the site of the present-day Art Institute

Sisters and Brothers of America,

It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world, I thank you in the name of the mother of religions, and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects.

My thanks, also, to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honor of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration. I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to Southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings: “As the different streams having their sources in different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee.”

The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita: “Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me.” Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

LARGEST SINGLE OBJECT

The largest single object (not counting galaxies, universe, etc.) ever discovered is S5 0014+81. Get ready to be extremely surprised.

S5 0014+81 is a quasar. Upon further inspection, they discovered that a black hole resides at the center of the quasar. Scientists expected a medium-sized black hole... but were surprised to find that the black hole's mass was 40,000,000,000 (40 billion) solar masses.

*Wait 5 seconds to let this happen*

The Schwarzschild radius of this super heavy black hole is 118.35 billion kilometers.

Doesn't seem like much, huh? Well, here's the thing: if our sun were the size of a football, the diameter of the little guy would be 37.42km.

Here's another image to help you deal with the size of this object:

UNIVERSE - CREATED?

The purpose of creation is LILA - the Play of the Divine. God, being perfect and self-fulfilled cannot possibly have a reason or purpose for creation. If He/She/It does have purpose then the Divine perfection is compromised. Creation of something is only required if that thing is lacking in oneself. Some would say that God created the Universe for self-glorification and so that he could be adored by humankind - what does this say about his lack of self-esteem?

The other theories of why an omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent God would create an imperfect universe only has meaning in a geocentric universe - where mankind is the centre of creation. In a Hubble perspective (Home) they are meaningless.

The earth is the size of a grain of sand on all the combined beaches of the world! Why on earth would the Divine Source of this unbelievably and inconceivably vast universe require earthlings who are only 100,000 years in existence on a temporary grain of sand want, need or require our, worship, adoration and validation?

So Hinduism concludes that there is only one possible reason for the existence of the Universe - Divine Play. When one dances or plays - there is no purpose, goal or aim to be achieved there is just self-satisfaction, self-pleasure. This is illustrated by the dance of Lord Shiva as naṭarāja - the dance of creation, preservation and destruction - it has its similitude in the dance of the atom.

The vast cosmos is dancing and vibrating to the tune of the cosmic drum (ḍamaru).

WE SEE STARS ARE ALWAYS IN THE SAME PLACE ...HOW?

 They're not.

And those stars are farther away than you can wrap your head around.

So even moving faster than anything man has ever created…it takes centuries to thousands and thousands of years for them to visibly have moved.

That's the movements of the stars that make up the Big Dipper, from 100,000 years in the past to 100,000 years in the future (date is in the upper left corner). It takes longer than human civilization has been a thing to noticably move.

HUMAN AURA

An aura typically refers to an electromagnetic field of energy that surrounds all living beings. Experts and psychics claim that the human aura can be seen as a luminous, colorful body that surrounds our physical body and consists of different layers.

Each layer represents different aspects of the physical and spiritual self. As our aura is an extension of our living presence, everything from trees to animals has an energy field around them, explains Healthline.

This energy field can expand and contract depending on our health, mindset, mood, behavior, and actions. This energy field is often explained as a transparent enclosure of light that surrounds us from head to toe.

PERSONAL GROWTH

Personal growth is a journey of self-discovery and self-improvement that helps us understand ourselves better, improve our relationships, and increase our overall fulfillment in life. It is a process of continually learning, evolving, and becoming a better version of ourselves.

When we strive for personal growth, we are setting goals for ourselves and working towards them. This can be anything from learning a new skill, to developing better relationships, to improving our physical and mental well-being. By setting and achieving these goals, we gain a sense of accomplishment, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. This can lead to increased confidence and self-esteem, which in turn can help us navigate through difficult and uncomfortable situations.

Personal growth can also be a way of living more authentically and meaningfully. When we understand ourselves better, we can make more informed choices about how we want to live our lives. We can set boundaries, learn to say no, and prioritize things that are important to us. This can lead to a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment in life.

In addition, personal growth can lead to increased resilience. Life is full of challenges and difficulties, and personal growth can help us develop the skills and coping mechanisms we need to handle them more effectively. As we learn to understand and manage our thoughts, emotions, and reactions, we become more equipped to handle difficult situations.

Overall, striving for personal growth can be difficult and uncomfortable, but the benefits of self-improvement often outweigh the challenges. Personal growth helps us become the best version of ourselves, and it can lead to a more fulfilling, authentic, and meaningful life.
