When we see semen, we only see it as a liquid form, but there is deep science within, it contains sexual energy and this energy creates a life when you do mating with an opposite sex.
When yogis emphasize on preserving semens then they don't mean this semen will travel upward within the body, the sexual energy which is hidden in semen will travel upward and here you grow spiritually.
The same sexual energy has the ability to produce life, one life outside and one life inside.
