Gandiva was a divine bow having the power of 100000 bows. It was made up of 108 divine string.
Agnidev need to burn khandava forest so that he could satisfy his hunger but due to freindship of Takshaka naag with indra, Indra did not let agnidev to burn the forest. Agni dev requested Sri Krishna with Arjuna as well to help and Arjuna had also need to burn the forest so that he could help in establishment of indraprastha. Krishna and Arjuna helped agni dev After that Agni dev requested Varun dev to give divine bow Gandiva to Arjuna. After that Arjuna got it.
