The Cartwheel Galaxy.
One of the most puzzling objects ever seen. It was discovered in the 1940s and was considered a major challenge to explain by any conceivable theory, how one could get a ring of blue (star-forming) material around a relatively dead central lenticular galaxy, with a bunch of “spokes” connecting out to the wheel.
Recently, supercomputer simulations have shown that such an object can be formed by having one galaxy plunge directly, and at high speed, through the middle of another one. What are the odds??
