How big is TON 6 1 8?
TON 618 is one of the most massive black holes ever discovered. It sits about 10.4 billion light-years away and has a mind-blowing mass of around 66 billion times that of our Sun.
That makes it an ultramassive black hole, far beyond the size of even the largest supermassive black holes found in the centers of galaxies.
Its event horizon, the point beyond which nothing can escape, would stretch over 400 billion kilometers across, that’s more than 60 times the distance from the Sun to Pluto.
TON 618 is so bright because it’s surrounded by a glowing disk of gas and dust falling into it, making it one of the brightest quasars in the known universe.
This monster black hole challenges our understanding of how such enormous objects could have formed so early in cosmic history, just a few billion years after the Big Bang.
