WEEKEND WISDOM

Lessons from the Olympics

- Phil

We have once again been bombarded with the
spectacular show that is the modern Olympics.

Already there are signs that technology will introduce new
ways of experiencing them.

Just as Obama's Twitter campaign signalled a major shift in
how a political campaign used technology like never before.

What will also be true is the fact that the Olympics, generally
regarded as the pinnacle of achievement in sport, does actually
mirror life.

Or is it the other way around?

One thing is for certain; you will witness all the drama, the pain and the ecstasy and every emotion in between.

There will be disappointments. There will be failures as well unexpected successes.

For the athletes taking part there will be a wide range of motivational factors.

For some, this will be their swansong, for others this will be the beginning of an illustrious career, and then there are those who came, saw and failed never to return.

Of course we will experience poor sportsmanship, poor decision
making by officials and cheats will be exposed.

Along with the naturally gifted athletes [who still do the
work, and the training], most participants will have made great
sacrifices to be selected to compete.

So what's the difference between those who go for gold and
you and me?

Nothing.

If you have a burning desire for something, a dream yet to
be fulfilled, you must realise that you must actually do something
in order to succeed.

Like most athletes at the top of their game, you will
experience failure, you will have more ups and downs than hot
dinners, but you will get up again. You will overcome doubt and
disappointment and others' opinions and you will persist.

And if you persist and make changes to your plan as required;
as you fine tune your actions and goals, you will succeed.

There will be a price to pay.

The good stuff isn't free.

However when you get your very own Gold Medal you will know
that the price you paid was worth it.
