THE SECRET OF MOON ON THE HEAD OF SIVA

According to the science, it takes about 27.3 days for moon to complete the revolution around earth.

During which new moon has to pass through various phases and again forms a new moon.

(HINDU ANALOGY)

There is a tale where 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati, marry Chandra Dev. But Chandra Dev only loves one and ignores 26 others. This makes Daksha angry and he curses moon to fade away as he was proud of his brightness.

Chandra Dev then requests Lord Shiva to help him, and then Shiva and Daksha argue over the fading of moon, finally Lord Vishnu settles debate by saying Lord Shiva taking moon over his head and taking responsibility to keep half moon shining, while Daksha keeping half moon fading.

In this tale, 27 daughters of Daksha; is a metaphor for explaining that moon has more than 27 phases.

  • Moon loving only one: is a metaphor for fact that full moon is the condition when moon is completely visible.
  • Distributing moon to half by Vishnu: is a metaphor that represents moon will be getting bright in one phase and it will be getting fade in other.
  • Shiva holding moon on head: is metaphor for first 15 phases for which moon is bright.
  • Daksha causing moon to fade: is a metaphor for next 15 phases for which moon is fading.

Long before our Scientists today, ancient people had told us about revolution and phases of moon.
