The original name of Mahabharata was Jaya Samhita, that is, Mahabharata was earlier called as Jaya Samhita.
The Mahabharata, which was narrated by the sage Veda Vyasa and written by Ganesha, was earlier named as 'Jaya'. Then Vyasa's disciple Vaishampayana narrated this story to King Janamejaya (son of Parikshit and grandson of Abhimanyu), after whom it was named 'Vijaya'.
Then later it was named 'Bharat'. And sage Shaunaka and other sages of the Naimisharanya forest added additional verses with the teachings and message behind the events of Mahabharata and it was eventually named as 'Mahabharata'.
Jaya had about 25,000 thousand verses while the final form had more than 100,000 verses.
