CHIRANJIVIS

In Hindu mythology, the concept of Chiranjivi (or Chiranjeevi) refers to eight immortal beings who are believed to have gained immortality through various boons or blessings from gods. These immortal beings are said to exist throughout the four Yugas (ages) and are considered timeless witnesses to the events of the universe. The eight Chiranjivis are:

1. **Ashwathama:** Ashwathama was the son of Guru Dronacharya, the legendary teacher of archery and military arts in the epic Mahabharata. He received a curse to wander the earth eternally in penance for his role in the Kurukshetra War.

2. **King Mahabali:** King Mahabali, also known as Bali, was a generous and just king who was known for his devotion. Lord Vishnu granted him the boon of residing in Patala (the netherworld) and visiting the earth once a year during the Onam festival in Kerala.

3. **Vibhishana:** Vibhishana was the younger brother of the demon king Ravana in the epic Ramayana. He was known for his righteousness and loyalty to Lord Rama. After the defeat of Ravana, Vibhishana was crowned as the king of Lanka and granted immortality by Lord Rama.

4. **Hanuman:** Hanuman, the mighty monkey god, is one of the most revered deities in Hindu mythology. He played a crucial role in the Ramayana and was granted immortality by Lord Rama as a boon for his unwavering devotion and service.

5. **Kripacharya:** Kripacharya was another prominent character in the Mahabharata. He was a great warrior and teacher, and his immortality was granted through his righteousness and knowledge.

6. **Parashurama:** Parashurama was the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. He was known for his exceptional skills in wielding the axe and exterminating evil from the earth. He received the boon of immortality from Lord Shiva.

7. **Vyasa:** Vyasa, also known as Vedavyasa or Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa, is considered the author of the Mahabharata and other Hindu scriptures. He is believed to be an immortal sage who has witnessed many ages.

8. **Markandeya:** Markandeya was a devoted sage mentioned in the Puranas. He was blessed with immortality by Lord Shiva after surviving the end of a cosmic cycle (Pralaya) through his intense penance and devotion.

These Chiranjivis are revered in Hindu mythology for their remarkable qualities, knowledge, and devotion. They are considered eternal beings who continue to inspire and guide humanity throughout the ages.
