The sole purpose of Breath Awareness during Meditation is to transcend the Mind as Mind and Breath are interrelated due to both being Air element. Transcending the Mind(No-Mind)is accompanied by No-Breath state which ultimately results in experiencing Samādhi after being consciously awake in the state of Dhyāna for a prolonged period of time.
Hence in Breath Awareness during practising Dhāraṇā one should sit in Meditative posture thinking that one is neither the Body nor Mind and must separate oneself from Breath also by just being the Witness/Seer(द्रष्टा) of Breathing.
There should be no conscious breathing. Just Effortless Meditation involving Breath Awareness otherwise Breath will not become shallow and Mind-Lake will be filled with ripples of Thought Patterns/Waves(Vrittis) which will not allow the sādhaka to enter into Dhyāna.
