The Kaaba is empty inside. It's open twice a year for cleaning. The interior is decorated with gifts from kings and emperors, including:
- Black Stone of Mecca: The cornerstone of the Kaaba, and a Muslim object of veneration. The stone is believed to have been given to Ibrahim by the angel Gabriel. According to tradition, it was given to Adam to obtain forgiveness for his sins. The stone is now broken into pieces and held together by a silver band.
- Statues of pagan gods: The Kaaba previously housed statues of pagan gods, including a statue of Hubal, the principal idol of Mecca.
- Incense burners: There is a small table for incense burners.
- Marble cladding: Caretakers perfume the marble cladding with scented oil.
- Gold and diamond lamps
- Gold plates with Quranic verses
The Kaaba is also covered by a great cloth called the Kiswa. The Kiswa is removed and replaced with a new cloth every year. The Kiswah is considered a sacred act that honors the holiest site in Islam. The black color was chosen because it's durable and can withstand being touched by visitors.
