In reality, this sublime shot shows us two interacting galaxies which during their collision will form new stars.
The two spiral galaxies began interacting a few hundred million years ago and are named for the long antenna-like "arms" that extend away from the nuclei of the two galaxies. These tails formed during the initial meeting of the galaxies and give us a preview of what might happen when our own galaxy, the Milky Way, collides with the neighboring Andromeda Galaxy in several billion years.
