Yes, malayalam and tamil language are related to each other. You can call malayalam as sankrit infuenced tamil.
Malayalam came into exist only like 5 centuries ago(Drafted). Chera’s are the first one who started talking Sanskrit-Senthamiz (malayalam) language.
There was a political reason for the evolution of Malayalam. South India was ruled by Tamil dynasty but in Kerala there was strong presence of Sanskrit only speaking Aryans. So this Aryans and Dravidans went through a lot of tensions, conflict and wars at that time.
Later this two came into diplomatic terms and used this Sanskrit words widely with Tamil.
A different language called Malayalam came into existence.

Tamil was the reason for Malayalam but at least 60–70% of words using in Malayalam were Sanskrit.
