LUNULA - HALF-MOON

The lunula, also known as the half-moon, is the visible part of the nail matrix, producing the nail plate. Its size and appearance can vary, but changes can indicate underlying health conditions. Small or absent lunulas may indicate malnutrition or iron deficiency anemia. Blue-colored lunulas may indicate Wilson's disease, irregular or misshapen lunulas may indicate fungal infection or psoriasis, and spots or streaks may indicate vitamin deficiency. The lunula also plays a role in nerve function and sensation, with larger lunulae resulting in better sensation in fingertips.
